Detail Page redesign … tells an ambitious story

I’ve spent a lot of time on the detail page design. It is ambitious (in features).

design_detailpage_9.jpg

Have a look.

Here are the main points:

  1. Ability to navigate directly to the next piece, by artist or by category (good for browsing).
  2. Listen to the piece directly from the page
  3. Tip the artist (or rather, the work). Opt-in module for those who wish to “earn” from their work. Why limit ourselves to either free downloads or paid downloads? Why not have both? Have a look at my previous blog entry for the reasoning behind this.
  4. Email me feature. This enables the artist to build a list of ‘communication pipes’ directly with the people interested in their work. This is naturally very valuable.
  5. Book Tickets feature. This is really projecting forwards. The aim with this (optional) module would be that Ambisonia could act as a booking agent for specific artists who tour/perform.

There’s a bit of back-end work to implement this detail page…. but you get the concept. This design actually encapsulates several different business models.

  1. Tips. Could also be referred to as ‘optional paid downloads’. Site needs to be optimised to encourage people to offer tips. Artist keeps 70% of the tip’s net profit.
  2. Email me. Whenever an artist submits a new piece, all of their ‘subscribers’ would be notified automatically. If the artist would like to send out a special email, Ambisonia would charge for the use of that user database.
  3. Book tickets. Booking agent functionality.
  4. Google Adsense (still trivial earnings, but if there’s enough traffic this could cover server and bandwidth costs).
  5. Advertising in the ‘Listen Now’ module. I havn’t illustrated this in the design, but the concept is that when people hit ‘play’ the space above the Quicktime player could display a video advert similar to the kinds of adverts Google wants to do in Youtube.

I’m liking this page design. I feel it is starting to deliver a good experience, a bit of revenue for artist and Ambisonia, and building communicative channels between artist and audience.

New look preview

Here is the design for the new look front page. Its about 80% complete.ambisonia_frontpage_design_.jpg

The key points are:

  1. Listen directly out of the front page. Tunes will be randomly rotated so each time the user refreshes the page there will be a new tune to listen to.
  2. Categories.
  3. News section… and other sections below that for other things

The second page (the detailed page) is almost more important. And perhaps more difficult to design.

Ambisonia detail page design option A

ambisonicfile_view_design_1.jpgI have no training in graphic design… but I’ve been doing all the graphic design on ambisonia.com. I’m getting better at it, I learn mainly by copying sites which I think do things well. The top of the front page is essentially a copy of flickr.com.

… and then I go through hundreds of little iterations of modifications, trying, throwing out, choosing, tweaking. It is actually very difficult and sometimes progress can be really slow.

My conclusion is that achieving good design is difficult and very time consuming. The attached screenshot is for the current state of the ambisonia detail page… not happy with it yet.

Ambisonia.com V3.0 screenshot

site_screenshot_v20.jpgSo this is a screenshot of ambisonicbootlegs V3.0 or ambisonia V1.0… Its more professional looking but it has Information Architecture problems. I asked a few people who had never seen the site before to tell me what they thought it was, and they couldn’t work out that it is recordings. Its obvious that it is about surround sound …. but some thought it was hardware.

Got to fix that up… with some better wording on the head title.

There’s lots more new design stuff coming!

Ambisonic bootlegs V 2.0 screenshot

site_screenshot.jpgFor posterity’s sake, here is the V 2.0 design before the name change to ambisonia.com. There’s a lot of text there …. less than the V3.0 design (first ambisonia.com design). What I like about this deisgn is the 2 word title, in black and white on a light blue background.

Ive been building ambisonicbootlegs for over a year now. It started off as a concept, and is starting to grow into something serious… when I have a look at my list of enhancements, I realise I have along way to go… but when I look at this screenshot from over a year ago, I also realise I have come a long way …Old screenshot of ambisonicbootlegs
